Chapter Twelve

Alyssa

The first crack of dawn illuminates the streets around me, so I know that I need to hide from plain sight. Only at this moment, I don’t care whether I’m lost or found, whether the vampires would find me or not. I don’t care about anything. My heart feels broken, because it belongs to Orien, and I can’t give it to him.

I hide behind houses, cars and trees, making sure that I am not seen, as the daylight becomes stronger and stronger. I am close to the woods. I just need to slip into the shadows, and there I’ll be safe.

But at that moment, I hear a thin little voice calling out a name.

“Benjie!” The voice crackles all throughout the street, echoing off of the trees, which were about to welcome me into their shadowy embrace.

I’m about to enter the woods and disappear from the streets of the town, when the same voice calls out again.

“Benjie!”

This is your chance.

That voice has become more treacherous than ever. I know why it agreed with Orien, only so it can convince me to go back to my promised path and walk it until the very end, until I reach my goal.

You are so close. Don’t get distracted now that you are inches away from the finish line.

I stop right in front of the woods. The breeze is beckoning me to come inside, to enjoy the shade and the shelter it offers, but the voice of the little girl keeps pulling me back, where I’m not supposed to be. I’m trying to fight it. I’m trying to force myself to keep going forward, but I can’t. That obligation is too powerful, a promise given to someone who is no longer with you outweighs everything else.

Be careful.

I turn around and listen to the sound. The girl calls out that name again, and I head in that direction. It takes me only a minute, to find her in a small, concealed street, standing in the very center, looking about nervously and apprehensively.

I walk over to her, trying to smile reassuringly. When she sees me, she hesitates, but being a child who has grown up in a town where everyone is to be trusted, she easily overcomes that initial fear that is supposed to keep her safe.

“What are you doing out all alone?” I ask. “I thought everyone is supposed to be inside, with their mommies and daddies.”

I look at her dark, charcoal curls, and the red bows in her two pigtails. She doesn’t look older than seven or eight, but a wise seven or eight. Or perhaps, a too caring seven or eight year old, because if she were wise, she would know not to disobey a direct order to stay inside, instead of venturing out on her own in search of someone.

“I lost my dog,” she explains her predicament.

“How did you lose it?” I ask, looking about.

“It wasn’t in my room when I woke up this morning,” she tells me how it all happened.
